Mesochora’s dam is the root project of the diversion. It was originally designed by the Public Power Corporation (abbreviated as ΔΕΗ in greek) as a purely hydroelectric project, with a water level of 60m. However, as a diversion project, the height rose to 155m, with a very large amount of water storage that in the summer will be channeled to the Thessalian plain for irrigation.

Such a huge project will destroy the entire upper reaches of Acheloos, with the region’s unparalleled natural beauty and associated flora and fauna. In addition, Mesochora, Armatoliko and three more settlements will be flooded. The social cohesion of the surrounding area will be irreparably affected. It is a completely illegal project. Its life span is a few years due to the soil morphology and the large volume of transported materials. The fluctuation of the water level will create an additional dead perimetric zone of 40m height. Also, due to the existence of a fault in the north of the dam location, on the left abutment along the natural flow of the Acheloos – and in the absence of seismic studies – no solvency is provided for the future of the dam.
